Gary Gygax, one of the co-creators of the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, according to Stephen Chenault, CEO of Troll Lord Games.

Gygax designed the original D&D game with Dave Arneson in 1974, and went on to create the Dangerous Journeys and Lejendary Adventure RPGs, as well as a number of board games. He also wrote several fantasy novels.

"I don't think I've really grokked it yet," said Mike Mearls, the lead developer of the upcoming 4th edition of Dungeons and Dragons. "He was like the cool uncle that every gamer had. He shaped an entire generation of gamers."

The father of D&D the game that spawned, well everything from P&P RPG to the MMORPG's of today.

Very sad day indeed. Without him, most of us probably would have had dull childhoods.

  binarydumb on 03/04/08 16:07

Who would have thought such a "geek" thing would bring about what we have today. I recall starting ADnD back in 1979. A close group of friends (we were called "The Sliderules" in HS- ROFL ) decided to give it a try. We started Friday night and did not sleep till Sunday. :-o

Sigh....ADnD, Harpoon, and Star Fleet Battles...my favorite pencil and paper games to this day. :-p

Rest in peace, Gary, and thank you for starting it all for us.

Rest in Peace, inventor of Roleplaying.

  Cr3ss3nt on 03/04/08 22:55

=[ That sucks.

I have yet to play D&D, but I know for a fact its a great game.

R.I.P. Gary Gygax

Thanks to Gary for Hobby that's lasted from 79 and still going.

  Shaggy67 on 03/05/08 08:17

Rest in piece Gary,
Gary & Dave were true innovators at TSR Hobbies. The art work in the books were phenominal and caught my eye first.Once I learned how to play the game me and my group of friends spent a lot of nearly sleepless nights playing. Then once the computer games started rolling out,on the commodore-64, we were hooked all over again. The RPG community owes a great deal to Gary and Dave for starting it all. Otherwise we probably wouldn't have the MMORPG's that we now enjoy today.

  RonJ73 on 03/05/08 08:24

AD&D and related paper and dice RPGs were a staple of my growing up. It really helped a shy kid from Rhode Island to open up, make friends, and conquer a huge case of stage fright. Although it was innundated with bad press from certain Right Wing groups in the US, it was a huge driving force in helping cultivate the creativity in the youth of the world.

The man may be gone, but his legacy will be with us for many many years. Without Dungeons and Dragons, there wouldn't have been the enormous boom of role playing epics.

J.R.R.Tolkein might have been the father of modern fantasy, but Gary Gygax is the father of modern gaming, fantasy and otherwise. I don't imagine anything in the gaming industry would be even remotely what it is without him.

sad news :( i never actually played D&D but I've heard a lot of great things about it that really makes me wish I had it.

A founding father of RPGs, GENCON, and Dragon Magazine. His contributions will be remembered until there are no more dice to roll. Rest in peace Gary, May your halo be a +5 Vorpal Holy Avenger, or your Pitchfork be a +5 Unholy Reaver!

I know that Gary Gygax and Jay Miner (Father of the Amiga computer) are probably the two people outside of real life acquantances that have most profoundly impacted my life.

  Dystrophy on 03/06/08 22:36

rest in peace gary. thanks for showing me that growing up is overrated.

  Thundarpants on 03/07/08 12:34

What! No fate points?! DAMN...... /emote throws dice on the floor
Rest in peace to the father of all that made geek life bearable.

Goodbye Gary.

Our world has lost a true icon but the next has gained a true gamer.

The father and driving force behind fantasy what influenced new, "modern" fantasy, i truly cant believe he has died, its such a shame, i know for a fact though, people aged from 7 years old to 60 years old who have all enjoyed a D&D game will greatly miss this great guy, not only was he innovative but also he understood what us geeks wanted, i hope he had a great lifetime as i suspect, atleast he wont be forgotten!
